Ask the student to read the passage. Follow up the reading by having the student retell the passage and/or have the student respond to a series of questions that you have prepared to test the student’s understanding of the text. The questions should include items that reflect the student’s literal recall of the passage, the student’s inferential meaning of the passage, and finally, the student’s critical analysis of the passage.
